Virtual Private Networks (VPN)
A VPN is a secure, private communication conduit between two or more devices such as a server and several remote users called “clients.” VPN clients have the ability to connect with VPN servers, logon and communicate since they're on the same virtual network. Although a VPN utilizes a public network like the Internet, it provides the security of a private network by encrypting data before it is sent and decrypting it once it is received. Since a VPN uses an existing WAN (Wide Area Network) infrastructure, they can be deployed more quickly and far less expensively than traditional private networks.
Wireless Networking
Today’s fast-paced business environment makes the need for roaming laptops to communicate with each other critical. CTB continually monitors changes and new trends that develop in the market place as this technology matures. We have deployed a number of newly developed Wi-Fi solutions, paying special attention to wireless networking security.
Unfailing Backup Solutions
Downtime due to system failure can be costly and unproductive. However, the loss of critical data can spell disaster, with the result directly affecting your bottom line. Many out-of-the-box backup solutions merely copy files to tape. CTB offers a myriad of backup solutions including the highly recommended Backup Assist, with which we incorporate periodic testing of the restoration process under various disaster scenarios.
Corporate Anti-Virus Solutions
A virus attack on your system can mean prolonged downtime and productivity loss – especially with today’s new blended threats. Virus protection is no longer a luxury; it should be an integral part of any network. CTB will work with you and your staff to provide you with the best software to protect your network environment against all virus threats. We highly recommend AVG Anti-virus or CA Integrated Threat Management depending on your needs. These solutions supply the ultimate protection against viruses including those that can take up storage space and memory that downgrade the performance of your computer system.

Connecting Remote Locations
Small business owners often become overwhelmed by the numerous methods available to connect remote users and locations together. Initially, one must determine how remote users or locations will connect to the home office or headquarters. This can be achieved via the Internet, using DSL, T-1, frame relay or some other similar solution.
Other considerations include the type of access necessary. Is access to email sufficient or do users also need to access data or a database using native access or is a secure web session suitable? Should employees to have access to all same services as if they were in the office such as printing or access to file servers? Depending on your specific needs, Terminal Services, Citrix, or thin clients may be the appropriate solution.
Many small businesses have users that utilise both home and office computers. Frequently confusion arises when trying to determine whether a specific document is the most current. Depending on specific requirements (speed, security, price etc), a VPN, Microsoft RDP or LogMeIn are just a few possible solutions.
Unfortunately, when there is a need to connect remote users and remote locations, there is no standard solution. One must consider security, speed, productivity and business requirements for all remote users and locations in order to select the right solution for your business.
Emerging Technologies
Hot new technologies frequently capture the attention of the business world. Often featured in publications, seminars, Webinars and conferences, emerging technologies provide solutions that can streamline operations and increase productivity. A couple of these technologies lead the pack.
VoIP (Voice) over IP technology allows telephone calls to be made over a broadband Internet connection. Calls can be made using a computer, an IP telephone, or an adapter attached to a standard telephone. This technology is ideal for systems with underutilized data connections. Frequent travelers will find VoIP advantageous since all that is necessary to make international calls without the necessity of international cell phones or calling plans is an Internet connection. Drawbacks to this technology include battery backup to guard against power outages, and inconsistent uptime and voice quality depending on Internet connections.
SaaS (Software as a Service) is software applications used or accessed via the web rather than being installed on each user's machine. These products are built specifically for one-to-many usage over the Internet. The advantages include no IT department maintenance or updates, no hardware management, instant updates delivered by the software company, and a pay-as-you-go licensing model.
Disadvantages might include long term costs, lack of application control, limited customization capability, and vendor viability. Some of the more visible SaaS products include Salesforce.com, QuickBooks, Managed Outlook Exchange and WebEx.
